Milk teas are so fun to make at home. They are just so easy and taste just as good as one from a boba shop. I know vanilla sometimes has a reputation for being boring, but I disagree! I actually love vanilla and its perfect with black tea, your sweetener of choice (I like brown sugar) and whole milk. Let’s make Vanilla Milk Tea!

What is vanilla milk tea made of?

To make this bubble tea, you will need:

How to make vanilla milk tea

Start by steeping two black tea bags in boiled water with one vanilla bean pod, cut in half. You can scrape the vanilla beans from inside the pod if you wish to add more vanilla flavor. Steep the tea for 5 minutes and remove the tea bags and vanilla bean. If you steep black tea for much longer than that, it will become bitter and not enjoyable to drink.

Stir in the brown sugar and vanilla extract until sugar dissolves. Add the milk and chill the tea mixture while you cook the boba. Place tapioca pearls in a small pot and cover with 2 inches of water. Bring to a boil and cook until all the boba float to the top.

Some helpful things to have when making and drinking boba at home include

  • A small mesh strainer: to strain the boba pearls easily
  • Boba straws: these are reusable and you can keep them forever, meaning you are ready for boba any time!
  • Liquid measuring cup: steeping the tea in a large liquid measuring cup with a spout makes it easy to steep, mix and pour your tea over ice.
