What are kumquats?

Kumquats are small, citrus fruits that resemble miniature oranges except they are oval or round in shape. Unlike other citrus fruits, kumquats have a sweet edible skin and a tart flesh. Very tart flesh! The first time I tried a kumquat I was actually repulsed, it was so sour! Then a coworker told me how excited she was to go to the farmers market on the weekend and buy kumquats. When I asked what she did with them, she said she roasted them. I was very intrigued and trusted her taste so I too went to the farmers market that weekend and ever since I’ve been creating kumquat recipes. I LOVE kumquats. Their flavor is so unique and in the right context, absolutely delightful.

The entire fruit, including the peel, is edible. There are different varieties of kumquats, but the most common ones are the Nagami and Marumi kumquats.

Sweet kumquat recipes

Kumquats lend themselves so well to sweet recipes because they are so sour! Adding sugar creates that yin yang effect that keeps things so interesting and delicious. But! Kumquats can also be delicious in savory recipes and we will get to that.

Kumquat jam

This kumquat jam recipe is simple and yields a delicious jam with kumquat’s unique citrus flavor shining right through. It’s perfect for toast, scones, and anywhere you like to enjoy jam!

Kumquat upside-down cake

Probably my most favorite kumquat recipe ever. Forget about pineapple (just kidding, kinda), kumquats were made for a tender, fluffy upside down cake situation. It’s seriously so good. The sticky caramelization on top from the brown sugar + butter with kumquats is a heavenly pairing to say the least. And I guarantee you will be asked for this recipe!

Roasted kumquat scones

Roasting kumquats opens up a whole new world of possibilities where they can be used in a sweet or savory recipe. It’s super easy to do too! Mixing them into scones, which so commonly are studded with dried fruits, is a no brainer. And a very delicious one at that.

Kumquat chocolate bark

If you like orange and chocolate together, you’ll love this kumquat chocolate bark recipe. It gives a similar effect, but the unique taste of kumquats still shines through. A little sea salt and earthy roasted pepitas creates a harmonious snacking chocolate you’ll be making again and again.

Savory kumquat recipes

Now for a few scrumptious savory recipes using kumquats. I’ll admit it’s a bit more challenging for me to create savory recipes with kumquats for the reason mentioned above–kumquats just go so well with sugar! But I love the recipes I’m sharing here today and am always brainstorming more.

Roasted kumquats

Roasted kumquats lend themselves to both sweet and savory recipes. They are actually even tasty all on their own. Roasting them reduces the severity of their sour flavor, gives them a nice chewy texture and leaves their delicious, intense citrus flavor intact.

This salad recipe is a fun way to use roasted kumquats and it has a great balance of flavors, which is always my mission with any recipe. Crisp, mixed greens topped with candied walnuts (or pecans), sliced provolone and a sprinkle of roasted kumquats make for a tasty salad that is perfect paired with grilled chicken.

Sweet & sour kumquat chicken

Think orange chicken but with kumquats and a little healthier because the chicken isn’t breaded. Also easier, and just as delicious. I use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce, but you can still use soy if you like. This chicken is perfect with fluffy white rice and broccoli for a healthy, asian-inspired meal that’s way healthier than takeout.
