It feels weird to say I’m obsessed with a homemade marinara sauce but I kind of am. It’s just so good. I don’t feel the need to try other recipes or even tweak this one at all. It’s perfect. There’s garlic, but not too much; onions, just enough; and sugar, just a tad. Somebody please tell me I punctuated that correctly. I think the sugar is the secret that makes it so delectable. It really helps to balance out the acidity of the tomatoes. Then there are a few herbs and that’s it!

I’m just sitting here thinking about it and I can’t wait to eat it again.

This homemade marinara is so simple. You probably already have all of the ingredients in your pantry. Here’s all you will need:

  • canned, peeled, whole tomatoes
  • red onion (I’m sure other types would be fine but this is what I’ve been using)
  • garlic
  • dried oregano + basil + salt + pepper
  • sugar
  • olive oil
  • 20 minutes

See? Super simple!

I think this marinara is perfect! Chunky tomatoes, herbs, onions, garlic and a kiss of sugar make for an absolutely lovely sauce.

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 25 minutes
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x
  • Category: Side Dish
  • Cuisine: Italian

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 large red onion (or 1 small), chopped
  • 1 tbsp garlic (23 cloves), minced
  • 1 28oz can whole, peeled tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in medium saucepan while you chop the onions. Add the onions and sauté until soft and translucent, about 10 min. Turn the heat down if they start to brown.
  2. Add the garlic and sauté about 2 minutes.
  3. Next add tomatoes and begin breaking them up with a spoon. Add sugar, salt, and herbs.
  4. Bring to a gentle boil and allow to simmer at least 10 minutes, more is preferable – up to 30 minutes.
  5. ENJOY!

Notes

  • Enjoy with roasted spaghetti squash, pasta, on pizza or anywhere you use marinara! I’ve added ground turkey recently for a heartier meal and it was delicious.
  • This will make about 4-5 1/2 cup servings and can easily be doubled to suit your needs.
