What is a rose latte?

First off, what is a rose latte? I’ve been seeing different recipes with rose for quite a while now, but I have only recently started trying recipes with rose. Better late than never!

A rose latte is what it sounds like – a coffee/espresso drink with rose flavoring and cold or warm milk. You can either use rose water (affiliate link) or make homemade rose syrup to flavor your latte.

What does a rose latte taste like?

A rose latte tastes like a creamy coffee drink – a traditional latte – with just a touch of delicate floral flavor.

You might be wary of eating anything rose-flavored and I don’t blame you. You might be wondering if it’s just going to taste like lotion or a candle. Flavoring with rose water or rose syrup is like flavoring with lavender syrup– you need to have just the right touch of floral flavor for it to be really lovely and not perfume-y.

Rose latte ingredients

  • Your choice of milk – Oat milk or whole milk are my favorites, but any type of milk will work!
  • Rose water and sugar – Or, you can use my recipe for rose simple syrup in the place of both!
  • Ground coffee or espresso – I just make strong coffee in my french press.

How to make a rose latte

When I make a latte at home, I prefer to just brew strong coffee. You can make espresso if you like and easily sub that in!

I start by brewing extra strong coffee in a french press. While that is brewing I heat the milk in the microwave.

Once the coffee is finished brewing, I froth the milk using a milk frotheradd the rose water and sugar, then stir. Lastly, I top the drink with the frothed milk.

Note: If you want to flavor your latte with rose simple syrup instead, you would want to skip the rose water and sugar and just add to taste. I usually use about one tablespoon of syrup.

Voila!

Rose Latte health benefits

Since researching rose, I’ve learned it actually has a lot of potential health benefits! Rose water contains powerful antioxidants, which are great for our health.

Antioxidants help fight free radicals, which damage our cells and cause disease. Whether you make rose simple syrup from dried roses or use rose water, you can enjoy these benefits.

In addition, rose water:

  • Contains vitamins A, C, E and B
  • Is anti-inflammatory
  • Can improve mood

Substitutions and Variations

Some recipes call for coconut sugar or maple syrup instead of granulated sugar or simple syrup. Others call for beetroot powder to add a bright pink color to the drink. This is totally optional and in my opinion, the flavor of beetroot powder is detectable, so I opt to keep it out. There are also recipes that use rose powder instead of rose water or syrup.

Storage Instructions

As with any coffee drink, it is always best consumed right away! But if you’d like to store leftover latte, simply place them in an airtight container such as a mason jar. Leftovers can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 days for the best taste.

What goes with a Rose Latte?

In addition to coffee, rose pairs nicely with white chocolate. A rose latte with some White Chocolate Rose Truffles would be the perfect treat for Valentine’s Day!

Also, some rose latte recipes call for vanilla extract to balance out the strong flavor of rose.

What else can I make with rose flavor?

  • Rose Matcha Latte has less caffeine than a cafe latte and the earthy flavor of matcha pairs well with the floral rose
  • Rose Milk Tea, made with black tea and boba (tapioca) pearls is a refreshing iced treat!
