What you need to make an oat milk matcha latte

Simple Ingredients for an Oat Milk Matcha Latte:

  • Unsweetened matcha green tea powder
  • Hot water
  • Oat milk or other milk of choice: while this recipe is focusing on an oat milk matcha, you really can sub in and equal amount of any milk you want
  • Sweetener of choice

What kind of matcha should I use for a latte?

I’ve gone through a couple different brands over the years and I definitely have my favorites. For lattes, its best to use a ceremonial grade matcha. It has better flavor, is less bitter and has a more bright green color. You can also use culinary grade matcha though. It’s still good and is definitely cheaper! Jade Leaf is one of my favorite brands and I have gotten the Everyday Matcha (which also happens to be organic matcha powder-woot!) at Costco and I really like it.

Sweetener options for Oat Milk Matcha Lattes

I typically use brown sugar in mine but you can use any sweetener you like. Honey, agave syrup, maple syrup, simple syrup or just regular sugar are great options too. Or try adding lavender simple syrup for an amazing lavender matcha latte.

I give measurements for the amount of brown sugar I use, but feel free to change it to your preferences. I find that about 1.5 tablespoons is the perfect balance of sweetness and that earthy matcha flavor for me.

Milk options

You can use any milk you like to make a matcha latte at home. Oat milk is my favorite plant-based milk because it has the best creamy texture. (Chobani is my favorite brand of oat milk!)

Cashew milk, coconut milk and soy milk are other options for a creamy vegan matcha latte.

You can also use whole milk if you want.

What is matcha?

Matcha is powdered, specially processed green tea leaves. It’s a very fine powder and instead of steeping and straining as with regular tea, all you do is add water and whisk. And if you’ve ever wondered why matcha can be a little pricey, it’s a bit of a labor intensive process to make and only the highest quality leaves are used. You can read more about it here.

What does it taste like?

Matcha has a grassy taste to me, perhaps a nicer way to say that is earthy. It tastes much stronger than regular green tea and has a really unique flavor, so it’s a little hard to describe. If you haven’t tried it, I recommend you just give it a go and see if you like it! There are a lot of health benefits to drinking matcha and green tea.

Is a matcha latte actually healthy?

By now I think we’ve all heard that green tea is good for you, matcha is no different. It contains antioxidants, improves attention with less jittery effects than coffee, may improve heart health and can aid in weight loss. Matcha tea also has benefits for skin! Its antibacterial properties help fight acne-causing bacteria and prevent oily skin.

How to make the healthiest matcha latte

The biggest thing that usually makes a drink less healthy is the sugar content. If you are wanting a more wholesome drink, use a more natural, less processed sugar source like honey or maple syrup to sweeten your matcha latte. If you are concerned about fat content, use low-fat milk, almond milk or rice milk.

How to make an oat milk matcha latte

The process for making this drink iced or hot is virtually the same so we will go through both methods together.

Start by adding matcha powder to the bottom of your drinking glass or mug (if making a hot latte).

Add a small amount of hot water, about 2-3 tablespoons. For best results, use a bamboo matcha whisk to whisk the mixture and remove and lumps.

Add your sweetener and whisk again. If you are making a hot matcha, warm your milk and froth, if desired. I love a foamy matcha latte and I use my electric milk frother all the time!

Now all that’s left is to add oat milk (and ice cubes if you’re making an iced matcha latte)!

Enjoy!
