It’s a well established fact around here that I love Matcha! I have lots of matcha recipes always with plans for more. As I mentioned, matcha pairs well with so many flavors. My two favorite pairings are chocolate or strawberry.

Helpful frosting making equipment
With the right tools, making frosting is a breeze! Here are some helpful kitchen tools that you will need to make this matcha buttercream frosting:
- Mixing bowls – I prefer glass mixing bowls as they basically last forever.
- Rubber spatula(s) – a few different sizes are helpful. This set has a great arrangement and also comes with a silicone pastry brush, which you won’t need for frosting but it’s great for scones and other baking recipes!
- Electric hand mixer or stand mixer – either one will work! It really depends on my mood which one I will choose. Because I like quick and easy baking recipes I probably reach for my hand mixer more. I usually just want my dessert already, but the stand mixer is great for bigger projects and when you really want to get serious about baking.
- Measuring spoons and cups – really a must for almost any cooking project!
How to make matcha frosting
If you have any experience making frosting, matcha frosting is just as easy to make as you might think. All we are doing is making a buttercream frosting and adding matcha powder.
Start by creaming butter in a stand mixer (you can also use a hand-held mixer), once cream add the powdered sugar, matcha and salt.
Beat on low and add in the milk. Increase the speed as most of the sugar gets incorporated and beat until creamy/smooth.
Frost the *cooled* cake immediately after mixing up the frosting. Enjoy!
Where to buy matcha
I recently bought a bag of Everyday Matcha from Costco and have been loving it. It tastes great and the price is crazy good. Before finding that I would usually buy Jade Leaf on Amazon. This link is for culinary grade matcha which is fine for baking but not as good for drinking. If you want matcha for drinking, go with ceremonial grade–its less bitter.

Matcha frosting (Buttercream)
Matcha Frosting goes so well with almost any cake! One of my favorite pairings is with chocolate. This frosting is not only beautiful to look at, its a delightful change of pace from the usual buttercream flavors.
- Prep Time: 15
- Total Time: 15 minutes
- Yield: about 2 1/2 cups frosting 1x
- Category: dessert
Ingredients
Matcha frosting
- 1 1/2 tbsp matcha green tea powder
- 1 cup salted butter, two sticks, softened
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla, optional *see notes
- pinch salt
Instructions
- Start by beating the butter on medium speed in a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Beat until creamy.
- Add the powdered sugar, matcha, milk, vanilla and salt. Start the mixer again, on low. As it’s mixing, increase the speed as the sugar gets incorporated. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as necessary with a rubber spatula. Beat until fully mixed and creamy.
Notes
- This frosting will taste great without vanilla, but it really does enhance the flavor so I recommend using it if you have it.
I wanted to clarify that it is the paddle attachment. I use the whisk that came with my stand mixer for creaming egg whites, butter and sugar, etc. Do you also have a recipe using whipping cream for matcha frosting? I prefer that to buttercream frosting. Thank you!
Hi Meg, yes I would use the paddle attachment if using a stand mixer. I actually just used a hand mixer for this though. I don’t have a recipe with whipping cream but you could likely just swap it for the milk in this recipe.
