Hi friends, today we are going to learn how to roast kumquats! Kumquats are interesting little things. Tiny little citrus fruits that are extremely tart when raw but turn into something kind of magical when roasted. I’d never been into kumquats much until a friend from work told me that she roasts them. I was instantly intrigued and knew I had to try it and I am SO glad I did.

What do kumquats taste like?

So…a moment of honesty. I find raw kumquats to be a downright assault on my tastebuds. They are extremely sour to me and I just can’t eat them raw, but roasting them completely changes things. I LOVE roasted kumquats. They remind me of little jewels with their brightly colored, shiny appearance and mysteriously intriguing appeal. They become sticky and chewy with a more pleasant texture than craisins or raisins. I make that comparison because I think they could function much like them in most dishes. Think scones, salads with chicken and more! The flavor after roasting them is intense, orange-like with their sourness factor still there but subdued. So far, I’ve tried them in scones, salads and cakes. Both are delicious!

How to roast kumquats

It’s super easy! All you need to do is slice the kumquats into 1/4 inch pieces, toss with some olive or avocado oil and salt and roast for 25 minutes!

You will want to stir the kumquats about halfway through the cooking time though. Just to make sure none of them get too browned.

  1. So delicious! I made one batch as shown and a second with some fresh rosemary. They made a great topping for some watercress soup.
