Honey Scones
These Honey Scones are sweetened only with honey. They come together easily and taste amazing!
I’m on a honey kick now with these Honey Scones. Or maybe it started years ago with Honey Banana Bread. Either way, these scones are so good! They are naturally sweetened only with honey and come together easily into a really nice, workable dough. They puff up beautifully in the oven and almost have the texture/taste of a really good biscuit. Let’s make them!

Ingredients in honey scones
To make these honey scones you will need the following ingredients:
- All-purpose flour
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Butter
- Eggs
- Honey
- Sour cream
- Milk
While honey is important in these scones (they are honey scones after all!), sour cream is actually the secret to a good scone. Scones can be sort of dry, which is probably why they are commonly eaten with things like jam and cream but I really prefer a more moist scone. These are fairly moist and remind me of biscuits.
How to make honey scones
Cut in the butter into the dry ingredients
Start by combining the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then cutting in the butter with a pastry blender (affiliate link). Some scone recipes will say to cut in the butter using two knives but I think its way easier with a pastry blender. They aren’t expensive and really help these scones come together quickly.
Work the butter in until pea-sized lumps form.
Add all of the wet ingredients
Next add in the egg, honey, sour cream and milk. Stir with a fork just until a dough begins to form. Some crumbly bits are ok. You can work these in while you knead.
Knead, shape and cut scone dough
Turn the dough out onto a clean, floured work surface. Add any crumbly bits to the top of your dough mound so you can fold them right in.
Gently knead the scone dough about 10 times, until it smooths out and can easily be shaped into a ball.
Then flatten it into a disc about a 1/2 inch thick. Then cut into 8 pieces like a pizza.
Brush with an egg wash and bake
Egg wash is optional but really ensures the scones will have this nice golden brown color. Scones bake at 400F for about 15 minutes or until golden 🙂
What to eat with these scones
These scones are tasty as is, but can be even better with some honey cinnamon butter! It’s easy to whip up and amplifies the honey factor.
Just whip together (using an electric mixer) some softened butter, honey, cinnamon and sea salt and you’ve got honey cinnamon butter. Recipe below!
These would also be delicious with classic scone accompaniments like clotted/whipped cream and/or jam.

Ingredients
- 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 6 tbsp salted butter
- 3 tbsp honey
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 1 tbsp milk
- 2 eggs one is for an optional egg wash
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment.
- Combine flour, salt and baking powder in a large mixing bowl. Stir to combine.
- Cut in the butter using a pastry blender until pea-sized lumps form.
- Add the honey, sour cream, milk and one of the eggs *beaten* and stir gently with a fork just until the dough begins to come together. Some crumbly/dry bits are okay.
- Turn the dough out onto a clean, floured work surface. Scoop any dry bits on top of dough mound so you can fold them in easily.
- Knead the dough gently about 10 times, it should come together to form a relatively smooth dough and be shaped into a ball easily. Then flatten into a disc that is about ½ inch thick.
- Cut into 8 slices and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment. If you are doing the egg wash, beat the extra egg and brush each scone with egg using a pastry brush.
- Bake for 13-15 minutes, until scones are golden brown.
- Enjoy!
To make honey cinnamon butter
- Combine 1 stick of softened butter with 1 tbsp honey and ¼ tsp cinnamon in a mixing bowl.
- Use an electric mixer to beat until smooth. Serve with scones. Store any extra in fridge for up to two weeks.

These scones are absolutely amazing! Not only was the recipe easy to follow but they were surprisingly so easy to make! They looked so beautiful, puffy, and just a perfect sun setting golden tone on top when I pulled them out from the oven. I broke one apart in half to see the inside and it’s like looking at a butter biscuit, so dense but yet light and fluffy. The taste??? Oh my gosh, to die for! The perfect honey sweet and if you add that whipped honey butter it just give them and extra sweet touch. Thanks for sharing! I’ll definitely be trying the other recipes. 💕
