I am eagerly awaiting cooler weather, baking cookies, and fall drinks. I have slowly gotten more and more into pumpkin spice season over the years so that means: get ready for more pumpkin recipes (Here’s a sample!: Pumpkin Spice LattePumpkin WafflesPumpkin Cold Foam, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies…and coming soon, Pumpkin Ice Cream)!

It’s SO easy to make this Homemade Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte, even though, I will admit–it is easier to just order one from Starbucks. But making it from scratch means you can use whole ingredients and a natural sugar source, which I love! Let’s make one!

What is in a Chai Tea Latte?

Chai tea typically consists of masala chai, which is a black tea that is brewed with black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger. These spices are generally known as “chai spices”. Variations can include other spices like star anise or fennel seeds. To make a chai tea latte, simply add some cold or steamed milk to the steeped tea.

Ingredients

Homemade Pumpkin Chai Tea Latte

  • Canned pure pumpkin puree
  • Chai tea bags – I have Trader Joe’s chai linked here because it is my absolute favorite! It has the best flavor and perfect spice level, but use whichever bagged chai tea that’s your favorite. Chai spices are the main flavor here, so make sure to use a brand you enjoy.
  • Honey – you can also use maple syrup or this delicious brown sugar syrup to sweeten this
  • Milk – I like using whole milk or oat milk in my lattes for the creaminess factor (especially if you use Chobani’s extra creamy oat milk) but any plant-based milks can work here as well (coconut milk, soy milk, unsweetened almond milk, etc.). I’ve also found that adding a splash of sweetened condensed milk makes most lattes way tastier (though not healthier, obviously).

How to make a Pumpkin Chai Tea Latte

STEP 1: Brew chai tea

Brew your chai. Use 2 tea bags in 1 cup of boiling water for extra strong chai. Also, be sure to press those tea bags against the side of the mug before removing to get out all the chai flavor that you can.

STEP 2: Add flavor

Whisk in honey + pumpkin. I love my mini whisk for tasks like this!

STEP 3: Warm and froth your milk (If making a hot latte)

Next, you’ll want to warm your milk either in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the stove over medium heat. Use a handheld milk frother or just shake the milk in a jar to make it more foamy. The shaking method won’t deliver super thick foam but it can still add some oomph if you don’t have a frother. Or, you can do what I do and use this fun all-in-one warmer and frother that makes awesome foamy milk every time!

Make this an iced chai latte with pumpkin

Making this drink in an iced version is just as easy! Simply add cold milk after you’ve added the honey and pumpkin. Then fill another glass with lots of ice. Pour the latte mixture over the ice for best results. Top with whipped cream or pumpkin cold foam if desired!

Making and Storing Chai Concentrate

If you’re like me, you want to have easy access to chai latte fixings whenever a craving strikes. To make chai tea concentrate, simply remove your tea bags from the hot water once steeped and allow it to cool to room temperature. Then add it to a jar with a secure lid, such as a mason jar. You can double or triple the recipe if you’d like to make more at once. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You might want to give it a quick shake before preparing your chai latte if you’ll be storing it for later use. For chai lovers like myself, you’ll want to use that concentrate for things like Dirty Chai Tea Lattes (a chai latte with an added shot of espresso), Chai Lime Spritzers and more.

Does chai tea have caffeine?

Yes, chai tea is made from black tea, which contains caffeine. If you’re looking for a non-caffeinated tea latte, try this yummy Rooibos Latte!
