Homemade Chocolate Milk

Homemade chocolate milk is so easy to make and absolutely delicious! It’s extra creamy and chocolatey, plus no weird food additives like you find in store-bought syrup.

I just love chocolate milk, even at my ripe old age of 31. I order it from Starbucks all the time and usually walk away feeling like a five-year old. But once I walk out those doors I get over it because I have a delicious chocolatey beverage to consume. Starbucks’s chocolate syrup is very tasty, but it’s still a syrup that I didn’t make so I have no idea what’s in it. Not to mention it’s way more expensive to buy chocolate milk from Starbucks than to whip up a glass of homemade chocolate milk. So let’s make our own!

Ingredients to make homemade chocolate milk

One of the best parts about this recipe is you probably already have all of the ingredients on hand!

  • Milk
  • Cocoa powder
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla
  • Salt

That’s it! You can use any kind of milk you like really. If using dairy milk, feel free to use whatever percentage you like. If you’re looking for a dairy-free alternative, try oat milk or cashew milk.

How to make chocolate milk from scratch

Start by adding cocoa powder, sugar, salt and vanilla to a microwave-safe glass. Then add two tablespoons of milk and whisk vigorously. My mini whisk works perfectly for this. If you don’t have a mini whisk, use the back of a spoon to get rid of lumps.

Once you’ve whisked the ingredients together, microwave for 30 seconds and then whisk again.

Now add about 1/4 cup of the milk and whisk again to combine the milk and the chocolate syrup you just created. Then add the remainder of the milk and whisk until fully combined.

Additional thoughts

I like to add ice to my chocolate milk. Is that weird? It makes the milk extra cold which just makes it extra enjoyable to me. Sometimes when I’m feeling fancy, I like to top mine with some whipped cream too!

Try subbing the initial two tablespoons of milk for half and half for extra creaminess.
