Earl Grey Tea with Milk Recipe (London Fog Latte)
Earl Grey Tea with Milk, otherwise known as a London Fog or an Earl Grey Tea Latte, is a delicious, feels-like-you-got-it-from-a-fancy-coffee-shop drink that you can easily make at home! With simple ingredients and endless combinations of sweetener and milk, it’s no wonder this is a favorite of many tea lovers.
Oh, do I love Earl Grey Tea! I mean, to be fair, I love most tea, but Earl Grey just has that je ne sais quoi that makes me keeps thinking about my drink long after it’s finished.
While this drink goes by many different names, no matter what you call it, it’s just a delight. Black tea with citrusy bergamot, cream, sugar, and vanilla unite to make one unforgettable tea latte. Let’s make one!

What is Earl Grey Tea?
Earl Grey tea is made from black tea that is flavored with oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange, which is mainly grown in Italy. It was named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, who served as the Prime Minister of England in the 1830s.
Earl Grey tea has a unique citrus flavor thanks to the bergamot oil. It can be enjoyed as a hot tea or an iced tea, sweetened, or black (without sugar or cream), but a traditional “London Fog” tea latte includes milk and sugar and is served hot.
If you’re in the mood for an iced drink, you can simply add ice cubes to this recipe, or try making this Earl Grey Bubble Tea simply by adding boba pearls.
What is The Best Earl Grey Tea to Use for Baking and Drinking?
My favorite Earl Grey Tea is Numi Aged Earl Grey. It’s Fair Trade Certified Organic, but apart from that, I’ve found that it has the best taste of all of the Earl Grey teas I’ve tried.
It is bright and balanced with a good amount of caffeine. You can typically find it on Amazon and in most grocery stores.
Baking, you ask? Why, yes! Earl Grey makes amazing baked treats such as scones, loaf cake, and more!
What’s in an Earl Grey Latte?
Ingredients for an Earl Grey Latte
- Earl Grey Tea bags or loose leaf tea
- Hot water
- Sugar – granulated cane sugar gives the best results
- Milk of choice – Any type of milk will do such as oat milk (my personal favorite), coconut milk, cashew milk, or regular milk
- Vanilla bean paste (affiliate link), or you can use vanilla extract, real vanilla bean or vanilla simple syrup
The ingredients in an Earl Grey latte are simple and together, they are just so delicious. The flavors of bergamot, cream and vanilla go together delightfully.
If you don’t have vanilla bean paste, you can use vanilla extract or vanilla syrup (here’s a homemade vanilla syrup recipe if you’re feeling fancy!). Just keep in mind if you use vanilla syrup, you will probably want to adjust the amount of sugar you add.
How to make Earl Grey Tea with Milk (London Fog)
Once you realize how easy it is to make a London Fog at home, you will be making it all the time! If you’re looking for a delicious iced variation on this recipe with boba pearls, you’ll find thorough instructions here.
Start by boiling water and adding it to your mug with an Earl Grey tea bag. If you use loose-leaf tea, add your tea to a tea infuser. A general rule is to use one teaspoon of loose tea per 6oz of water.
Steep for 3-5 minutes.
Add sugar and stir until dissolved. You can also add vanilla bean paste (affiliate link) at this point if you’re using it.
Warm your milk in a small pot on the stove until hot or in the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute. Use a milk frother (affiliate link) to make it foamy (if you’re feeling fancy)!
Then add the hot milk to your tea.
I just bought a bottle of dried edible flowers so I topped mine with a few for an extra special touch, but that’s definitely not required and does not affect taste.
These are the ones I bought and I love them! But there are cheaper options if you look around on Etsy!
Can you make this drink ahead?
Want to simplify your morning even further by whipping up this tea latte the night before? You totally can! I just drank an Earl Grey Latte this morning that I made yesterday afternoon and it was still delicious.
One tiny drawback if you make the entire drink the night before is that you will need to froth your milk again. Even without frothed milk, it is still delicious.
If you really want frothed milk and are still looking to cut a few steps out in the morning, just steep the tea and add the sugar and vanilla the night before. Then warm and froth the milk in the morning. You will of course also need to heat the tea again as well.
Substitutions and Additions
If you would like to add vanilla flavor but don’t have vanilla bean paste, you can achieve a good result by using vanilla-flavored milk, such as vanilla almond milk instead. If you like the taste of maple syrup, it generally goes great with tea and coffee drinks. Brown sugar syrup would go great in this as well! If you’re looking for a caffeine-free tea latte, try this yummy Rooibos Latte!
