Earl Grey Milk Tea

Earl Grey Milk Tea is the perfect Spring/Summer drink! It’s floral-y, sweet and cool!

You can make this milk tea with or without boba pearls. I’m not always a fan of the boba pearls but they do look cool!

So make that decision and then all you’ll need is Earl Grey tea, sweetened condensed milk, and a little regular milk. That’s it!

This is so easy to make and it’s highly addictive. Let’s make it!

What’s in milk tea?

Milk tea is typically just what it sounds like: milk and tea. It’s usually made with black tea, milk, and sweetener and it often includes tapioca pearls or boba pearls. It’s sometimes called bubble tea (when it includes the tapioca/boba pearls).

Is earl grey good for milk tea?

Yes, I can confidently confirm earl grey tea is good for milk tea. Earl grey is a black tea with bergamot which has a floral, citrus-y flavor that pairs perfectly with cream or milk.

In this recipe, I use a blend of sweetened condensed milk and regular milk to make a more authentic-tasting milk tea you might find at a boba tea shop. Sweetened condensed milk makes the drink slightly thicker and more creamy and lends just the right amount of sweetness when paired with regular milk.

Ingredients for Earl Grey Milk Tea

  • Single-serve Earl Grey tea bags
  • Boiling water
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Regular milk

And that’s all you’ll need to make a delicious glass of this milk tea!

How to make Earl Grey Milk Tea

Start by boiling water and adding it to a spouted vessel with 4 tea bags. Let the tea steep for 6 minutes.

Add the sweetened condensed milk and regular milk then stir.

Add boba pearls and ice to two glasses and pour the tea mixture over ice.

Enjoy immediately!

If you want to make an earl grey bubble tea, you will want to use boba straws (affiliate link), otherwise your straw will get clogged.

Another note on the boba – the tapioca pearls I’ve linked above are unsweetened.

The instructions on the boba package say to roll the pearls in sugar or to drizzle them with honey after you’ve boiled them. I didn’t add any sugar because the tea is already fairly sweet.

Creamy and sweet earl grey milk tea is easy to make a home! Boba pearls are optional!

  • Author: Becky Schmieg
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 2 1x
  • Category: Drinks

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 single-serve earl grey tea bags
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/3 cup 2 % milk
  • 1/2 cup tapioca pearls (optional)

Instructions

  1. If you’re using tapioca pearls, make these first. Boil 5 cups of water for every 1/2 cup of pearls.
  2. Then drop the pearls into boiling water (carefully) and wait for them to float to the surface. Boil about 3 minutes more. Carefully remove from water using a slotted spoon and place in a small dish until ready to use. I add a few tbsp of water to them if I’m not going to use immediately. *see notes about sweetening the boba pearls
  3. Make the tea: Steep tea bags in boiling water for 6 minutes.
  4. Add sweetened condensed milk and stir until fully incorporated. Add regular milk and stir.
  5. Split the tapioca pearls between 2 glasses, add ice to each and split the milk tea between the 2 glasses.

Notes

*The tapioca pearls I’ve linked in the post are not sweet at all. The instructions on the boba package say to roll the pearls in sugar or to drizzle them with honey after you’ve boiled them. I didn’t add any sugar because the tea is already fairly sweet. You might find you want to sweeten the boba too.
