Cinnamon Apple Compote

I’ve been making this Cinnamon Apple Compote for years–I can’t believe I haven’t shared it yet! It’s a great way to enjoy apples and sneak fruit into your meals/snacks. It’s also a good use for apples that may not be as crisp as you want for snacking on raw. Let’s make it!

Ingredients for cinnamon apple compote

The ingredients for this compote recipe are pretty basic! I usually have most of these on hand, hence, I make it all the time! Especially during the fall months when apples and cinnamon just feel right 🙂

  • Apples – I typically use Fuji or Gala apples
  • Maple syrup – you can also use agave nectar or regular sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Salt
  • Water

How to make this cinnamon apple compote

Dice apple into small pieces and add to a pot with maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice and water.

Cook the mixture over medium heat, covered, for about 15 minutes; stirring occasionally. Keep an eye on it– if it gets too hot or all the liquid is cooked away and the apples aren’t soft yet, add more water by the tablespoon and reduce heat a touch.

Store the finished compote in a glass jar in the refrigerator and enjoy for up to one week.

Where to use this compote

There’s so many ways I use this!

  • Stirred into a bowl of oatmeal or yogurt
  • On top of vanilla ice cream
  • Spooned onto a piece of peanut butter toast with flax
  • On top of pancakes or waffles

How long does apple compote last in the fridge?

Store this compote in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to one week. This recipe fits perfectly in a pint size mason jar.

Ingredients

  • 3 gala or fuji apples (diced (about 4 cups))
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/8 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine diced apple with water, maple syrup, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a pot and stir.

  2. Cook over medium heat, covered, for about 15 minutes or until apples are soft. Stir occasionally and reduce heat if liquid cooks away before apples are soft. Add more water by the tbsp and cook until apples are soft.

  3. Transfer compote to a glass mason jar and store in the fridge for up to one week.
