What is burrata cheese?

If you’re wondering what all the hype is about burrata, you gotta try it! It’s similar to fresh mozzarella, but has a creamy center that is just delicious.

Burrata has an outer ‘shell’ made of fresh mozzarella that encases small cheese curds and cream. It’s very soft, creamy and has a mild flavor.

Where to buy burrata

With burrata becoming more popular the past few years, it’s much easier to find. Trader Joe’s even sells it and since that’s where I do the bulk of my shopping, I usually get it there. A lot of chan grocery stores with a speciality cheese section will carry it as well. I have also seen it at Costco!

Ingredients you’ll need

Caprese burrata

  • Burrata cheese: if you can’t find burrata, you can just use fresh mozzarella.
  • Tomatoes: I like to use heirloom tomatoes for this because they have a ‘meaty’ center which is great when tomatoes are front and center in a dish. But really any type of tomato will work. You can even use cherry tomatoes.
  • Fresh basil: I always have fresh basil on hand thanks to my Aerogarden! There’s no way around needing fresh basil for a classic caprese.

Balsamic Glaze

  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Honey or sugar

You can also buy an already made balsamic glaze if you don’t want to make it yourself. I got this one on Amazon and its super tasty!

And if you don’t want to buy balsamic glaze or make your own, you can just drizzle with a little olive oil and straight balsamic and sprinkle with salt and pepper. It’ll be delicious no matter which way you choose. But I’m partial to a sweet and savory combo so let’s make this caprese burrata with balsamic glaze!

How to make it

How to make balsamic glaze

Making balsamic glaze is super easy but if you’re not in the mood, you can buy it pre-made too!

To make the glaze, simply add balsamic vinegar and honey to a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and allow it to simmer until reduced by half and thickened. This will take about 10 minutes.

Let it cool and it’s ready to use on your delicious caprese burrata!

Assembling the caprese

Arrange tomato slices on a large plate and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Top with shredded basil and burrata cheese. Break burrata open slightly to let the creamy center be exposed a bit.

Drizzle the whole plate with balsamic glaze, a bit of olive oil and sprinkle with more salt and pepper.

Enjoy! Serve it with nice crusty bread for the perfect appetizer!
